Wake Up and Scribble
Wake up and scribble. I like to wake up and scribble.
Why?
Scribbling is something you can do without thinking and there’s no judgment placed on the outcome. Scribbling is very freeing if you’re trying to make marks without the restriction of being perfect. I find myself waking up to scribble because recently I’ve downsized and can’t work large in my studio because I’ve moved. I used to work very large on silk, working on tables 3‘ x 6‘ with large pieces of silk. However, since I’ve moved, I don’t have my studio anymore and I’ve needed to find a new way of expressing myself through art. I’ve had art supplies for many years that I’ve kept on hand. I’m happy that I was able to find my oil pastels again.
Why?
My oil pastels have given me the opportunity to be free. I have paper and I just scribble. The oil pastels are very colorful, and I enjoy the texture of the oil pastels on the paper. I have dyes that I’ve diluted and painted over the oil pastels. It’s intriguing to me in the same way that silk painting was, and very rewarding.
If you can find alternatives and pivot to begin again with your passion using different materials, then try it out in whatever way you can.
It is imperative that I just wake up and scribble as it was difficult to lose my studio, but scribbling with the oil pastels is delightful. I have a collection of work on paper with the oil pastels and dyes and I want to work bigger. I am dreaming about bigger pieces of paper and how I can work bigger in a smaller space.
This is an example of how you can reinvent and redirect yourself, in order to have purpose. Doing hands on art supports the journey of experimentation freeing up your perfectionism, while being involved in the process. It’s a practice that you can apply to anything if you allow your imagination to lead your way, and explore different things and solutions.
